As-salamu `Alaykuim Wa Rahmatu Allah,
Dear brothers and sisters,
Today is the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah is known as the Day of ‘Arafah, which holds immense significance in the Hajj pilgrimage.
“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favors upon you.”
Understanding the meanings associated with the Day of ‘Arafah and applying them to our current time can help us derive spiritual benefits and deepen our connection with Allah.
The term “Tarwiyah” has multiple meanings, which are worth reflecting upon and incorporating into our lives, even if we are not performing the Hajj pilgrimage.
Here are the meanings associated with the Day of ‘Arafah and how we can apply them:
1. Almarafah (المعرفة), it is important to acknowledge the lordship of Allah and recognize ourselves as His servants. To do so, we can engage in Takbeer by saying “Allahu Akbar” which means “Allah is the Greatest.” From the Fajr of the Day of Arafah, we should increase our remembrance of Allah, glorify His name, and acknowledge His power and greatness in all aspects of our lives. It is important to align our thoughts, actions, and intentions with His commandments, seek His pleasure, follow His guidance, and submit ourselves entirely to His will.
2. Alaatraf (الاعتراف), or confession and admission, involves acknowledging and confessing our mistakes and shortcomings, but not to other humans. Instead, we should direct our admissions to the All-forgiving, Almighty Creator. Only Allah can forgive our sins and accept our repentance. To engage in this practice, we can sincerely supplicate (duaa) and ask Allah for forgiveness. It is a chance to reflect on our actions, seek forgiveness for any wrongdoings, and renew our commitment to righteousness. We should approach Allah with humility, sincerity, and a genuine desire to improve ourselves, seeking His mercy and forgiveness.
3. Altaaruf (التعارف), which means “getting to know one another,” is a concept that encourages us to celebrate our unity as one Ummah. It reminds us that we worship one only Lord, face one only direction, follow one only revelation, and believe in all Allah’s prophets. To practice this, we should show respect, humility, and honor to everyone, without any differentiation except by righteousness and good deeds. By recognizing our shared humanity and the bonds of faith that unite us, we can foster a sense of unity and compassion within our community.
When we align our hearts and actions with these meanings, we strengthen our spiritual connection with Allah and get some of the Hajj’s spirit, even if we are not performing Hajj this year.
I pray that Allah allows us to observe the Day of ‘Arafah, whether during Hajj or not, and that He accepts our deeds, pardons our sins, and showers us with His blessings and mercy.
