About BIS

Boston Islamic Seminary (BIS) is an Islamic institution of higher education dedicated to preparing religious leaders grounded in the Islamic tradition and characterized by spiritual and ethical integrity. The seminary equips individuals to serve American Muslim communities with wisdom, compassion, and professionalism.

BIS was established to meet a critical need within the American Muslim community: the demand for qualified religious leaders who can teach, guide, counsel, build institutions, serve families and communities, and respond to contemporary challenges while remaining rooted in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the rich scholarly heritage of Islam.

Originally founded as a community vision in 2008, BIS formally became a nonprofit institution in 2015. Since then, it has grown into a degree-granting seminary offering graduate-level education, certificate programs, professional development opportunities, public programs, and community engagement initiatives. The flagship program, the Master of Islamic Religious Leadership, prepares students for service in religious and spiritual leadership, religious counseling, arbitration, outreach, daʿwah, education, chaplaincy, and community leadership.

At BIS, the belief is that religious leadership is an amānah (responsibility), requiring more than just information. It demands sound knowledge, refined character, spiritual sincerity, practical wisdom, professional competence, and a deep commitment to serving people for the sake of Allah. The academic model at BIS integrates Islamic sciences, contemporary contexts, spiritual formation, leadership training, applied practice, and service to society. Through this holistic approach, BIS aims to cultivate leaders who are loyal to the Islamic tradition, aware of the realities of American Muslim life, and ready to guide communities with clarity, integrity, and compassion.

As BIS continues to evolve, there is a strong commitment to enhancing academic programs, faculty development, student support, institutional assessment, governance, public accountability, and accreditation readiness. The goal is to establish a trusted, sustainable, and excellent Islamic academic institution that serves the American Muslim community and contributes positively to the broader society.
