DESCRIPTION:
This course will encourage students to critically examine the role of a variety of media channels in shaping our perspectives, opinions and worldview. We will consider the role of media in shaping self-perception and public narrative through storytelling as well as journalism and the disruptive role that social media has begun to play relative to older modes of communication. Students will gain the ability to critically assess messages conveyed through the media and will thereby learn to become more sophisticated consumers of media. Students will also begin exploring strategies for engaging the media effectively, whether through interviews with journalists or by developing digital, video or print vehicles for communicating on behalf of an organization.
