Fatwā (Legal Rulings) and Contemporary Fiqh Issues

DESCRIPTION:

This course explores the problem of contemporary fiqh in addressing pressing ethical dilemmas. Students will examine the principles underlying fatwā (legal opinion) formation, including the spiritual, intellectual and social preparedness of the one issuing the fatwā. Students will learn to appreciate the gravity of this role and become familiar with resources on contemporary fatāwā. During class, students will also work with the instructor to analyze specific case studies (including financial, medical and techniological issues) and jointly formulate opinions for common issues that arise in Muslim communities today. At the end of the course, students will comprehend the process behind Islamic legal pronouncements and their unique dynamism in addressing contemporary fiqh-related issues.
