Workshop: Women’s Speech in the Qur’an: A Detailed Study of 33 Verses

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Description: 

The Qur’an contains 33 verses that include the speech of women or girl figures. This two-day workshop will hone in on this selection of verses in order to better understand overarching Qur’anic themes. The workshop is open to any student of the Qur’an. The workshop will be conducted in English, but we will also refer to Qur’anic verses in their original Arabic language.  

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Objectives:

Students will gain a better understanding of Qur’anic themes through examining the verses of the Qur’an that contain female speech.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, students will be able to offer linguistic, structural, and/or conceptual analysis of Qur’anic verses containing women’s speech and will better understand how these select verses relate to overarching Qur’anic themes involving gender, piety, and Islamic sacred history.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Celene Ibrahim is the author of Women and Gender in the Qur’an (Oxford University Press, 2020) and the editor of One Nation, Indivisible: Seeking Liberty and Justice from the Pulpit to the Streets (Wipf & Stock, 2019). Her current book project, forthcoming from Cambridge University Press, details how tawhīd informs Muslim thought and practice. Dr. Ibrahim received a doctorate from Brandeis University, a Master’s of Divinity from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University.
