PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Qur’anic Immersion: Recitation, Reflection and Application

with Dr. Basyouny Nehela, Sh. Abdelmeneim Mukassabi, & Dr. Suheil Laher

Wednesdays 6:30pm-9pm;  Starting September 11- December 11, 2019

Description:

Participants who plan to serve in the capacity of religious leader will identify and learn the most effective methods of interacting with the book of Allah in order to gain its living companionship and God-given directions. This course will cover most of the rules of reciting the Qurʾan (tajwīd) and familiarize students with various techniques of Qurʾan memorization.  It also teaches students how to reflect upon the Qurʾan’s timeless teachings and practically apply these reflections to their day-to-day lives and social context. By the end of this course, participants will be able to recite the Qurʾan properly, will have an established foundational practice of Qurʾanic memorization, reflection, and application, and will have gained the tools to continue a life-long personal relationship with Allah through His final revelation.

 

Objectives

  • Improving the performance of Muslim religious leadership in American society
  • Developing the next generation of leaders who are well grounded in Islamic knowledge and character
  • Training participants on making reflection and application of the Qurʾan’s meanings a part of their daily lives
  • Providing participants with a solid foundation and essential skills for a continuous fruitful relationship with the Qurʾan.
  • Demonstrating to participants how to relate to sacred knowledge experientially and further their own personal development
  • Preparing students who are interested in pursuing the full-time religious leadership program

 

Participant Learning Outcomes:

  • Implement at least the following Qurʾanic verses and hadiths:
    • (وَرَتِّلِ القُرْآنَ تَرْتيلا) “And recite the Qurʾan with measured recitation”
    • (خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ القُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَه) “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qurʾan and teaches it”
    • (كانَ خُلُقُهُ القُرْآن) “His (saas) character was the Qurʾan”
    • (الْمَاهِرُ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَة) “The one who recites the Quran smoothly and precisely will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels”
  • Design personal goals and plans for Qurʾanic memorization, recitation, reflection, and application in their daily lives
  • Outline and connect the lived examples of past and present scholars of tajwīd to one’s own life

 

Who should apply?

  • Required for: 
    • All students applying to the three-year Master’s in Islamic Leadership program (except those who pass the placement test or demonstrate previous training.)
    • All Muslims who have not formally studied the personally obligatory knowledge of belief, practice, and spirituality
  • Recommended for: all who strive to increase their nearness to Allah through the proper recitation of the Qurʾan and reflection upon its meanings.

Prerequisites:

  • Ability to read Arabic script (or memorize rules by ear)
  • Application and meeting with academic advisor

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS

Dr. Basyouny Nehela holds an M.A. in Fundamentals of Religion, and a Ph.D. with Honors in Da’wa and Islamic Culture, both from Al-Azhar University. He is currently the Dean of Academic Affairs and professor at Boston Islamic Seminary. Dr. Basyouny was previously an Associate professor at Qatar University’s Faculty of Sharia and Islamic Studies, Department of Islamic Creed and Da’wa, a faculty member at Al-Azhar University and Islamic American University, and Imam of the Islamic Society of Boston.

He has also served as head, and coordinator of many academic committees covering Curriculum Enhancement, Core Curriculum, Strategic Plan, Academic Activities and Events, & Professional Development. He has taught many academic courses including Fundamentals of Dawa, Ethics, Comparative Religion, Islamic Creed, Islamic Culture, Quranic Studies,…etc.

He participated and presented in many academic and Islamic conferences in America, Egypt, Qatar, Malaysia, Canada, India, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan…etc .He has designed and developed some academic curricula and courses for academic organizations and schools in America, Africa and some Arab countries.

Dr. Basyouny has published over 200 articles in newspapers and magazines on topics such as the methodologies and means of Quranic Education and Da’wa, contemporary youth issues and Islamic thought as well as presented in various television and radio shows at Al Jazeera network .He also offers regular workshops and lectures on family issues and contemporary marital and educational problems.

He received Qatar University’s yearly award for the best academic online course at the university, and another award from the College of Sharia for the best chair of the academic activities committee.

Sheikh Abdelmeneim Mukassabi holds a master’s degree in Telecommunication System Management from Northeastern University; beyond his major, he has a passion and a mission to serve the Holly Quran.

Sheikh Mukassabi memorized the Holly Quran in several modes of recital (several Riwayah) and is certified by a number of scholars with Ejazah / Isnad (continuous chains of scholars linked to Prophet Mohammed PBUH); he also studied the fundamentals of the Science of Qira’at (all Quran recital modes / Riwayah). He is an expert in the Art and Science of Writing the Holly Quran and other related Quranic sciences: Tajweed, Rasm, Dhabt, Waqf and Ebtidaa, and more.  His knowledge and expertise in Quranic sciences gave him the honor of being a member in committees of reviewing Mus’haf copies and committees of Quran Competitions, as well as a lecturer and a supervisor of Quran teachers and Quran memorization centers.

Sheikh Mukassabi has a number of certificates in Islamic law – Fiqh Maliki, as well as his mastery and license in Islamic Inheritance Law.

Sheikh Mukassabi has been working for 30 years teaching memorization of the Holly Quran in several modes of recital (Riwayah) and related Quranic sciences to all levels from first time Quran pupils to Hafiz. Sheikh Mukassabi also leads Taraweeh prayers  in his home country, the USA, and other places he visits.

Dr. Suheil Laher serves as Academic Dean at Fawakih, an Arabic language institute. He has been a tafsir and tajwid instructor at Fawakih since 2010 and has made significant contributions to the content and development of these courses. After studying electrical engineering at MIT, he earned an M.A. in Religious Studies from Boston University and recently completed his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies at Harvard University. He has previously taught Arabic at Harvard, Brandeis, and Boston Universities. He has benefited from a number of teachers of traditional Islamic disciplines, in the US and abroad, and has ijazahs in Islamic theology (‘aqidah), Islamic law (fiqh), hadith and other subjects. He has taught ‘aqidah courses at the Ella Collins Institute and the Bukhari Institute. He also has extensive experience working with youth while serving as Muslim Chaplain at MIT (part-time, 1998-2014).

The Boston Islamic Seminary offers competitive tuition rates when considered against other non-degree academic programs offered by a variety of institutions throughout Greater Boston. Standard tuition is $400 per program, however, until our August 16th deadline, we are offering all programs at a substantial discount.
