Title:  Director of Development


The Boston Islamic Seminary is seeking a motivated, energetic self-starter with excellent relationship building and communication skills to lead our fund development effort.  The ideal candidate will have experience working with the many different segments of the Muslim community in the United States, familiarity with contemporary Muslim issues and a passion for Islamic institution building in America.  The Director of Development will meet regularly with local donors and expand the Seminary’s donor network by delivering presentations at masjids and small-group gatherings and meeting one-on-one with potential donors throughout Greater Boston and New England.  If and when appropriate, some travel beyond New England may also be required. The ideal candidate will have the maturity and experience to deal with donor and financial information with discretion, and to directly but eloquently solicit donations in support of the Seminary.


  • Reports to: Executive Director
  • Develop fundraising plan in collaboration with other team members that aligns with the Seminary’s strategic priorities and annual goals
  • Collaborate with volunteers and staff of the Seminary, ISBCC and MAS-Boston to develop messaging, pitches and presentations to communicate the mission and value of the Seminary
  • Systematically develop relationships through phone calls and in-person meetings with Masjids and individuals to increase awareness of the Seminary and to cultivate donors to make pledges and contributions
  • Directly solicit donations to meet an agreed upon fundraising target
  • Travel nationally as needed to meet with potential donors on a one-on-one basis or in small gatherings
  • Write and/or deliver presentations needed for fundraising purposes
  • Support pledge follow-up work as needed
  • Contribute to expanding the Seminaries donor database


  • Passion and commitment to building Muslim institutions in America
  • Familiarity with diverse Muslim communities and culture in the United States
  • Commitment to and ability to communicate the vision of the Seminary and Islam in America
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills in English, and preferably also in Arabic
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills – a “people person”
  • Past fundraising experience in large institution is required, especially “front-line” experience and ability to “make the ask”
  • Good team player – ability to work with different people
  • Ability to travel as needed (mostly locally within New England)
  • Diligent and detail oriented, can be trusted to follow up on contacts made and expand the work of the Seminary
