Overview
The Islamic Intellectual History certificate provides a detailed understanding of the epistemological foundations of the Islamic intellectual tradition. It introduces students to the framework scholars have used for over fourteen hundred years to compile, authenticate and apply the sacred texts of Islam, the Qur’an and Hadith, to ever new and evolving situations. The courses in this certificate help students understand the basis upon which the scholarly tradition of Islam was built and will help understand whether and why the Qur’an and the other intellectual artifacts of Islamic civilization should be taken seriously. Students who complete this certificate will have a strong basis for understanding Islamic intellectual history and the reasons why the Islamic tradition has remained strong through the ages, as well as the ways in which Muslims have grappled with some of the challenges of modernity in the relatively recent past.
